Meeting with Councillor Steve Lehman

Meeting with Councillor Steve Lehman

On the afternoon of Monday, March 22, 2021, Steve Lehman, Councillor for Ward 8, will be meeting area residents, outdoors, to discuss the proposed installation of sidewalks on St. Anthony Road. It looks like it is going to be a warm, sunny afternoon.

When: March 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
Where: on the road near 1160 – 1164 St Anthony (we will walk east towards the proposed sidewalk)
Why: to show support for our neighbours, and opposition to the sidewalk

Despite our objections, (6 neighbours presented at the meeting) the Civic Works Committee meeting last week voted to recommend to council the installation of a sidewalk on St Anthony Road. This is now going to a vote at City Hall this Tuesday. Our Councillor Steve Lehman, and ex-councillor Paul Hubert have been working tirelessly for our cause.

The sidewalk policy of the London Plan is being driven by the City’s desire to make London
‘Barrier Free’ by 2025, as set out in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The issue is that sidewalks in our subdivision do not equate to safety or accessibility for themany people with disabilities who live here, and it is not stipulated in the AODA.

Although driveways being truncated, expense, taxes, parking, and aesthetics are all valid issues for homeowners, in this case Council is really concerned about the AODA, and the Climate Emergency declaration – two hot topics.

We need everyone’s support to protect our unique, safe, accessible community.

This is probably the most beautiful little subdivision in London. When walking the streets, the trees provide a very shaded, relaxing walk. There are few cars, mainly cars that are owned by residents of this subdivision. I don’t understand why the city wants to change this beautiful subdivision into a very ordinary, bland, hot, sunny subdivision. The whole character will change. Most people living here do NOT want this change. I live on one of the connecting streets and will lose 2 mature trees if London decides to add sidewalks to our street next year. My husband and I are seniors who enjoy walking now but will not enjoy the walk after sidewalks are in as it will be too hot with all those trees cut down.
Also, if we do have sidewalks, will we have to clear the sidewalk of snow in front of our house. We do shovel our own driveway and it would be a great challenge to also have to shovel the city sidewalk.
